I'll be honest, I have had a number of people ask me to write a little something about hackers. Personally I think the stereotype given to these people is really negative as nobody can say who is good or bad, it's really just down to the intentions a chosen individual has towards something.
I would happily support groups like Anonymous, Lulzsec, Cult of Dead Cow etc. now you might ask who are these people and why do they have names that are not something common that anyone could say.
Well, these groups have actually done a lot in regards to freedom of speech and making sure that they have been heard. I'll give you a little example, back in 2011 Sony had been 'attacked' by Anonymous due to legal actions against jailbreaker George "Geohot" Hotz. In Anonymous' eyes, the information Geohot had discovered - how to run pirated games, how to run 'homemade' software - was now in the public domain, and if anything, Hotz had done Sony a favour by exposing the company's own loophole.
A DDOS(Distributed Denial Of Service) attack was performed which basically is making an online service unavailable by overwhelming it with traffic from a very large number of sources. I found it really amusing because Sony was left in an absolute mess and just to think a group of minds got together and left a dent on a leading tech company because of their ridiculous actions.
You can find more information on the net in regards to the attack on Sony, but it probably is looking to make Anonymous sound really bad. I think Mr Hotz was onto something when he found the jailbreak which had exposed a flaw in Sony's system, if it was me I would've probably employed him because he found a hole in something which was built by an industry and I am glad he had the backing from Anonymous who stood up for him.
People need to stop looking at hackers as bad people as not all of them are but instead think hmmm why is this group/person committing this deed in the first place?
